Doc Watson Youtube Acoustic Guitar

This youtube video is of Doc Watson playing his Gallagher guitar complete with banjo player.  The tune is the Cuckoo a traditional folk song.  Its one of the most haunting songs I’ve ever heard.

Doc Watson – Youtube Deep River Blues

Doc Watson is a player who has inspired many acoustic guitar players, and the tune Deep River Blues is one that is part of many acoustic guitarists repertoire.  It’s a great song to build on.  Here’s a Youtube of Doc Watson playing and singing his original version, it’s two and a half minutes of classic Doc complete with guitar break.  It’s one of those songs that when you can play it, it plays automatically.

Here’s another Doc Watson Youtube Video called Black Mountain Rag

Jerry Douglas Youtube Slide Guitar

Jerry Douglas for many years now has been regarded as one of the top players in his field, resonator slide guitar.  It’s about 30 years since I first heard him and to watch play in numerous diverse line ups has only proved how brilliant he really is, from the straight Country, to New Blugrass with Edgar Meyer and Russ Barenburg,  I even saw a video of him playing with New York Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell.  You only need to hear one or two notes and you’ll know it’s him.  So today I thought it would be good to do a short post about Jerry Douglas youtube video  and expose his talents to people that may not normally listen to his style, which in truth is quite broad.   It’s a medley of tunes, the second one was recorded on an album Skip Hop Wobble. Resonator Guitar at it’s best!

Rockabilly Blues Riff for Guitar in G

Blues Rockabilly Riff, I wrote this a few minutes ago.  I was thinking a little about Flatt and Scruggs the great Bluegrass players and I picked up the nearest guitar that I could find, which happened to be my semi-acoustic Ibanez 105N, pictured below.

Ibanez Artcore 105N

I was going to write a Bluegrass type of tune and the following came out instead, it’s sort of a rockabilly riff I guess, a litle like ‘Your Mamma Don’t Dance’ by Loggins and Messina.  It’s what I call a ‘Three Chord Wonder’, a tune with three chords only but a valid piece of music.

You could play it slow, fast, Electric, Acoustic, Swing…whatever. So long as it is IN TIME.  Start slow and gradually get your speed up.  So many players are in a hurry to play fast, it’ll come.

Doc Watson – Black Mountain Rag

Doc Watson the blind acoustic bluegrass guitar player is by far one of the greatest players in his style.  What has surprised me a lot over the years, is that many people I have encountered thought he was a black blues player.  I have added this youtube video of Doc Watson because many people haven’t heard him play.  The song Black Mountain Rag is a classic.  For those that are interested in harmony and counterpoint, have alisten to the way the guitars start working together at about 2.27 and also the upping the tempo at about 3.04.

Brilliant. Doc’s contribution to the development of the acoustic guitar playing has been great, he has influenced many players. I think what has surprised me also is the stiffness of his right arm, slightly unusual

Enjoy the Doc Watson youtube video of Black Mountain Rag
