I'd actually never hear of Peter Sarstedt. Then again, I was only seven years old at the time. Gotta go check out where he's from. Seems to pronounce his words a bit too clearly for a native speaker, but I could be wrong.

I had blog snobism, the amount of times I've heard people slagging of blogs then you find out they read Gizmodo or engadget every day and you point out that they are blogs and they look at you like you're mad!

Plus your blog has lots of cool tab examples, I think you're doing a great job Tony!

Jerry Reid's recording of The Claw turned me onto acoustic fingerstyle music many years ago. It's on Youtube for anybody wants to take a look. I was also impressed with him playing the bad guy in a Burt Reynolds movie called Gator. But why, oh why did he agree to appear in Water Boy?

Knew it wouldn't be related to the Heartbeat TV theme, but still checked. Am not a guitar player. (Son is.) Your mention of the finger-picks has brought back something that my son tried to explain to me.

Yeah mike, he has a great right hand technique. I spent a bit of time in Scandinavia in the early eighties and a lot of players played fingerstyle nylon string.

I don't mind whether it's fingerstyle or plectrum, they both have advantages. For bluegrass and rock I always use a plectrum, on other stuff I'll use fingers or a combination. I never liked using finger-picks much, I found that they changed the angle of my hand a little. I did try them for a while. I found that I had to steam the picks over hot water to soften them, then reshape and also file them down. Grinding them down on the carpet is the best way to file them, you end up with a good smooth picking area.

Interesting point about slapping. A lot of players use it in quiet subtle manner, I guess the bottom line is whether it works or not and the volume really needs to be according to the needs of the song. The Brazilians use it to some degree. I'm not sure whether people would really disregard a technique because of plectrum being louder. Michael Hedges played brilliant fingerstyle.

Plectrum guitar can be much stronger, I find in the one song I'll often use both pick and fingers, often fingers for rhythm and pick for lead. Although OI remember times when I've been playing I'd forgotten that I use a pick in a particular song... someones called 1 2 ..1234 the songs started and at about bar 20 I've gone 'oh that's right I do this with a pick'...and then the trick was t forget that I was supposed to use a pick.

John Martyn used to do that style beautifully, and Bert Jansch had an unusual version of it.

I think it's good to be versatile and play multiple styles and techniques.

I liked that more than I thought I would. His slap picking is quiet even with amplification - must be why more acoustic guitarists don't use that style. A pick is just louder and stronger.

Thanks Terence.

It could easily be a tenor, yes. But there were 4 string tiples (one p, excuse my spelling in my original post. My memory of them was from when I was doing guitar construction some years ago, it may have been in the Larson book where I read about them). I saw what I thought was a tiple in a shop in 1996, I guy said it was a tiple and I assumed that they were that size, after seeing the dfinition below, you could very well be correct. Thanks for the heads up.

Here's a definition of a tiple.

tiple (Spanish, "little guitar"; pron. "tipple") a miniature guitar about the size of a ukelele, derived from South American traditions. It has ten steel strings arranged in four courses in ukelele tuning: A D F# B. The courses are strung double-triple-triple-double, and the inner string of each triple course is one octave down from its neighbors. It might have been featured prominently in a Disney film, "Honey, I Shrunk the 12-String". It was made by the Martin company in the 1920s and was still in their catalog in 1980. While it rarely shows up in North American folk, it’s a favorite with South American performers. See also taropatch for another ukelele relative.

Hey Tony,

I think this is a tenor guitar as opposed to a tiple...

A tiple as made by Martin guitars has 10 strings and is tuned like a uke.

A tenor guitar is tuned in fifths, usually CGDA.

The sound is rather different!

Warmest regards,
Terence

Thanks Mr Tennis.

In my original post I had the spelling of Ani diFranco as deFranco.

I appreciate you pointing out my typo. But i have managed to get McLaughlin and de Lucia corect on my other blog. http://the-guitarplayer.com
Regardless of this, I'll continue to post what I consider to be great information about acoustic guitar and help expose some of the players that the broader community needs to hear to inspire them in developing their own music.

@ Jeff. It's taken a fraction longer to respond, apologies.

There's not a straight forward answer to this because the response would be different in every situation but here's some ideas to get you started.

First of all work out 'when' they are playing and what the environment is like e.g are there only a few people, is the music to be in a small intimate setting or is at a function with quite a number of people. The tune/s would depend on that.

When choosing songs what needs to be taken into account is what 'mood' it is to create and I would work from that point,. Once you establish the mood of the music, then you can streamline it down to what songs you like.

Another thing to be taken into account is the style of guitar that both players can play and this will impact on what tune you select.

In my opinion, the only thing better than one guitar is two.

Some great options would be some sort of ballad that is a love song, most reasonable guitarists should be able to handle arranging any tune for two guitars, even if one just played the melody and the other some nice simple accompaniment.

If they are classical players or readers you'll have more opinions of pre-arragenged songs for guitar.

If you need some duets there's a guy from Iceland ( yes Iceland) that has a greast site full of arrangements, that would be my first port of call.

http://www.eythorsson.com/

I'd get them to aim at a song that wasn't overly complex but nice sounding, the less the players need to concentrate on technique, the more they can put into feeling.

Hopefully this is helpful

I wish you all the best and can't wait for the youTube of your wedding

In my opinion, the only thing better than one guitar is two.

Some great options would be some sort of ballad that is a love song, most reasonable guitarists should be able to handle arranging any tune for two guitars, even if one just played the melody and the other some nice simple accompaniment.

If they are classical players or readers you’ll have more opinions of pre-arragenged songs for guitar.

If you need some duets there’s a guy from Iceland ( yes Iceland) that has a greast site full of arrangements, that would be my first port of call.

http://www.eythorsson.com/

I’d get them to aim at a song that wasn’t overly complex but nice sounding, the less the players need to concentrate on technique, the more they can put into feeling.

Hopefully this is helpful

I wish you all the best and can’t wait for the youTube of your wedding

Tony

I am getting married and both my brother and my future wife's brother play guitar. We wanted to make them a part of the wedding ceremony and have them play an acoustic duet...but none of us have any ideas on what they should play.

Do you have any suggestions on songs they could play at our ceremony? Both brothers are above average talent-wise and could probably handle most songs given enough time to practice.

Thanks,

If you think back about the Stones, their early music was all blues based.

I enjoyed this video, I like to hear players on acoustic, I find it easier to to hear the musical voice on acoustic because it's not colored by technology
